Ship Reviews

Hubby and I are back as of Sunday from our first MSC cruise(s) and our first B2B. I haven't posted a cruise review in many years, but hubby and I felt that the ones we read when deciding what to book were so helpful to us that we wanted to pass along a short review and share our experience. We booked Yacht Club as a way to celebrate our 50th birthdays as well as our 25th wedding anniversary. We are very happy that we went this route after much back and forth on several alternate itineraries on other lines. We initially had a 10 night Irish cruise booked with NCL but after coming back from Rome last August we weren't as keen to fly across the pond so were looking for something leaving from the eastern seaboard that we could reasonably drive to from Toronto. We flirted with a HAL cruise out of Boston to the Maritimes as well as an NCL to Bermuda and an NCL to the Maritimes, Greenland and Iceland but in the end, we felt that a cruise to the Bahamas in the YC would be the level of rest and recharging we were looking for. We have cruised several lines but our preference is NCL so we generally look at them first when booking. That said, MSC has been gaining traction and we thought this would be a good opportunity to give them a try. After some research, here on CC with reviews and video walk throughs on another not-to-be-named video based site, we decided that we wanted to upgrade from our usual (usual for us is interior, oceanview or balcony, depending on the pricing and who is travelling with us) since we weren't bringing any of our four kids and we would treat ourselves to YC. We booked the same interior YC cabin for both weeks and were very comfortable for the duration of our cruise. I am very grateful to all those on here who have shared tips on how to get more storage out of the inside cabin. There is a serious lack of storage which once you are on board you realize that they could have fixed simply by putting a credenza/dresser with drawers immediately under the TV. There is sufficient room that is essentially wasted. That being said, we employed the strategy of two collapsible cubes for shoes, etc. in that space under the TV, we brought wire hangers to quadruple the ability to hang in the closets, we used an over the door shoe organizer that we hung over the closet door for sundries, medications, chargers, etc and we also brought along 6 magnetized hooks for my purse, hats, etc. These items really helped keep us organized and worked well for us for 14 nights. We are going to use these items in future travel. So - I won't go through day to day but will provide an overall impression... YC was awesome for us. We loved it. No fighting for a lounger, no dealing with body to body in the pool, no wait for dinner, no wait for anything really. We were hoping to have an elevated experience for this special trip and MSC delivered it. I will temper that with a reminder that we have never cruised in anything above a balcony previously. This is important because we did a lot of intelligence gathering from our fellow cruisers and they had definite opinions. For the most part - YC is grabbing NCL Haven customers. Most people we spoke to were comparing YC to Haven with the majority being first timers on MSC. Every single one of them said Haven is better. One guy though said he would never go back to NCL because of all their "nickel and diming" so he's an MSC YC fan moving forward. Several people who were like us, and hadn't cruised Haven but were regular NCL cruisers did book future cruises on board so will be returning to MSC. At least three couples aren't coming back to MSC - they like NCL and will continue to cruise with them. So mixed bag of future intention. Interestingly, although the we had the same itinerary both weeks (although Nassau and Ocean Cay switched days between the two weeks), we had significantly different cruise experiences from one week to the next. The first week was very nice... we got our bearings... kinda stuck to the YC for the special invite events, lounge and dedicated deck experience. We did venture out though to use the track, check out the ship for information gathering purposes (I believe I said "oh - the boys would like this" quite a bit), the ceiling shows in the galleria, a few shows in the Broadway Theatre and some of the other spaces (looking at you Champagne Bar and Sky Bar) as well as take in the for-pay Houdini show in the Carousel Lounge (not for us as it turns out). We thought the ship had a smart and logical design and really liked the feel of it. We didn't have to do any weird things like unnecessary dead ends and ups and downs to get around restricted spaces like we've encountered on some other ships. Very straight-forward and intuitive design and easy to find your way around. Unlike the Norwegian Prima (which we loved), the buffet had amble seating and reminded us of the Carnival Panorama - smart layout and lots of space. We ventured in here five times over the two weeks to get the amazing pizza. BEST PIZZA AT SEA, hands down, no one else even close in our experience. So good and well worth crawling out of YC for. The second week we took the chance to see some of the entertainment offerings we had missed the first week - a few more Broadway Theatre shows, new comedian (and we stayed up late enough this week to catch the late night show; which was hilarious) and repeated trips to see a really good singer/guitarist in the Brass Anchor Pub. The 80/90's night was a particular highlight as was the Elton John/Phil Collins night. The guy sounds so much like Phil Collins, I would have told you it was him live if I wasn't looking right at the guy performing. A lot of fun in this venue for sure. What made the two weeks feel so different though was the people. Week one was much more, reserved. People kinda stuck to themselves or their travel group for the most part. We did meet a few people and chatted with them off and off through the week but never for more than a few minutes. Everyone was kind and polite but kept to themselves, which we were doing too so it was fine. The second week everyone seemed to go out of their way to chat and carry on and want to get to know you. We met so many nice people and honestly this really enhanced our week. It was lovely to see the see the same folks repeatedly in the lounge or dining room and have a chat. We had a very memorable final dinner thanks to three other couples we had met and our fantastic wait staff. After many cruises, I think both hubby and I will both remember this meal the most for how fun it was. The staff was very attentive throughout and really wanted to deliver an exceptional experience. We were very happy with the wait team we had a lunch in the dining room the very first sea day and we requested him at dinner. It took the hostess a few days to realize that we always asked for him so by day 4 she did't even try to seat us elsewhere - we were with him for the rest of the trip. Hubby said it was like a throw back to when we first started cruising in the early 2000's.... and frankly a lot of what you get in the YC is exactly that: cruising as it used to be. It was nice to see consistent staff ... from our butler Kumar to our preferred wait team in the dining room (Christian/MacGyver), the sommelier and hostess to several serving staff in the lounge, and the folks serving on deck for breakfast and lunch; the staff got to know you and what you liked/wanted. I also really appreciated twice a day service in the stateroom and chocolates on the bedside table.... remember when this was standard? It was great. We also really appreciated the mini bar being stocked and loved having bottles of Italian water restocked every day in our cabin. We are big water drinkers (especially after a day of enjoying adult beverages) and it's always a pain to drag yourself to the buffet and double fist glasses of lukewarm water back to the cabin. It was a small touch that we really enjoyed. The cabin had excellent air conditioning (we had to turn it up after the first night) and they pumped what I would describe as a strawberry scent into the cabin so it always smelt fresh and clean. We had read that MSC isn't strong on entertainment but we had very good entertainment at the shows we went to, except for the pay show which we didn't care for (too artsy high concept for us - hubby thought it was a magic show and therefore was more disappointed than me). The singers, band, staging and quality was on par most ships we've been on so that issue seems to have been addressed. We had the pleasure of experiencing many of the lounge acts in our YC lounge throughout the two weeks - this ranged from two piano players (both good, but one sang and his singing isn't quite on par with his piano playing and I will leave it at that), a saxophonist (excellent), a guitarist/singer (excellent) and a Brazilian jazz/bossa nova trio that we really enjoyed (excellent). It was neat to experience them in another space and then intimately in the YC lounge throughout our cruises. We came home with more weight than we boarded with of course so to say that we found the food to be very good to excellent is an understatement. My husband loves seafood and oddly, though I am from the East Coast, I don't eat it. I have a shellfish allergy and fish generally doesn't appeal. Hubby had his fill of seafood for sure while I enjoyed other features like the filet, assorted risottos or pasta and pork. For the most part, we enjoyed breakfast and lunch on deck most days and this was more than enough to keep us happy. Hubby really liked the made to order omelet without the insane wait typical in the main buffet in the morning and we really took advantage of the carvery at lunch time though we did sneak in a burger and hot dog during both weeks. On that point, the burger at Ocean Cay is excellent (I had mine well done as I always request them to be cooked having had food poisoning once I am hyper sensitive about the cook on certain meats) and hubby loved the lobster roll. Can't really complain about the food but we are not fussy eaters by any stretch. As for the ports... well we didn't disembark at Port Canaveral either week.... MSC ports at a different place than we are accustomed to with NCL and Disney and there is a beach that is walkable but frankly we didn't know that week #1 and it was raining as we came in week #2 though it did clear up. We just enjoyed the ship those two days. Nassau we have been to many times... again, we didn't disembark week 1 but did book a shorex through MSC before we left. This was not a good experience overall unfortunately. We booked "Beach and lunch at Blue Lagoon" - well, we didn't get into port until 1:00, were told to meet at the Top Sail Lounge at 1:45 and they brought us shipside for 2:00 where we stood in line and waited until 2:30 to make our way to a boat to bring us to Blue Lagoon. I didn't have a watch but it was well after 3:00 when we arrived. I heard rumours that the ride there was 30 or 45 minutes. In any case, "lunch" was okay but literally at a time closer to when I would eat dinner at home. I think we grabbed a hotdog at 5:15. We were told prior to disembarkation that our return time was 6:00 to line up and 6:15 departure. The person made us repeat it twice. She said if we stayed later we would have to swim back. This is where the trouble starts. We make our way back to the dock at 5:50 and are told to step aside and let Royal Caribbean passengers through for like half an hour. Then we are told that a different colour tag for MSC are next and were yelled at to go sit by the bar. Then they allow some of our colour tags to queue but we are at the bar and we are yelled at to go to the back of the line. We, and several of us who were there before 6:00, weren't happy. I don't mind an error but be kind - you have stolen an hour of my beach time with your mistake and then you aggressively tell us to go sit somewhere so you should at least come get us to queue before allowing people just wandering up to get in line first. It wasn't fair and they weren't kind. We ended up having to wait until 7:15 to board a return boat... a full hour after we were told MANY TIMES we had to be ready. I believe we were back on board around 8:00 and by that time the entire port area was closed. While we thought the lagoon was nice, we chatted with several other people while there (both MSC and Royal pax) who all said it was a disappointment and a money grab. Will not do again. So the big attraction for us on this itinerary (other than being able to drive to embarkation) was Ocean Cay. WOW. Just WOW. We have been to Princess Cay, Royal's private beach in Haiti (name escapes me now) and NCL's GSC but WOW. Ocean Cay is awesome. Of course we had the YC experience both weeks but I had a good hard look at the other areas and they are comparable, if not better, than GSC and you have to tender to GSC (thank goodness NCL is finally dealing with that). Ocean Cay in YC is on another level. You are escorted to the shuttle and then taken to your own beach (old rocky) or a section of the beach on the other side. We did both given we were there twice. Old Rocky is rocky but has a breeze... the other side is smooth entry but stagnant - no breeze, just full on bake mode. Food and beverage --- incredible. Literally, if you know, you know. I was impressed with the variety of beaches offered here and definitely thought - wow - my kids would love this. Oh well, maybe another time! I don't imagine anyone can come here and have a bad time. You'd have to work at it. Spectacular private island well worth the price of admission! Construction was ongoing so who knows what else the future holds for MSC in the Bahamas. After all is said and done, I would not hesitate to book the Meraviglia again and we were disappointed to learn that MSC has no future plans to cruise out of NYC after April 2026 (we heard many different reasons why from passengers but tend to believe the rumour that the Brooklyn port is being rehab'ed and won't be available in the near future). We were hoping to book one week of a similar itinerary while on board to cruise with our boys either next summer or the following but will have to wait and see if MSC returns to this port in future. In the meantime we are going back to Carnival and NCL for a multigenerational cruise next March break but MSC (non-YC) is definitely in the mix for our family moving forward and YC for an adults-only vacation in future (sorry kids).

We really enjoyed our time on the MSC Meraviglia. THE GOOD: - All the staff were amazing. They were kind, attentive, and fun. Especially our cabin attendant Elden, and our waters Jason and Jonathan. They made sure our sailing was spectacular. - The cabins and public areas were extremely clean and frequently cleaned. - Coffee (especially the cappuccinos) - Pools were clean and good temperature (although they were a bit busy) - Embarkation & muster drill was super easy (definitely just get it out of the way as soon as you board) Areas I'd love to see improvement: - The food: There was some really good food (especially in the main dining room), however I often found a lot of the food to be just average. I'd also like to see more variety of food included in the cruise fare, since only the buffet and main dining are included. - Cabin beds: The cabin beds were not great. They were on the harder side and often uncomfortable. Things to Consider Before Booking: (essentially stuff that that the cruise line can't make immediate changes to): - Only 2 American and 2 European outlets in our cabin - make sure to get an adapter - Shower was pretty small - Not many FREE activities beside the pool and some hosted-events.

The whole ceiling∘ of the inside promenade will be covered with a giant 480-m² LED screen: a digital sky, capable of transmitting vistas, events, sunrises, sunsets and the starry skies at night.
