We sailed on a seven night cruise on the Norwegian Jade, Whittier-Hubbard Glacier-Icy Strait Point-Juneau-Skagway-Ketchikan-Vancouver. Overall, we had an excellent experience, although there was some room for improvement. One of us was a first time cruiser and the other had experience on NCL and other cruise lines, but never in Alaska. The very very good: 1) The itinerary and excursions. The stops were all super interesting for nature lovers and teeming with wildlife. We booked NCL excursions at all the stops other than Ketchikan, and they were all top notch. Glacier viewing trip at Hubbard Glacier: really necessary to get an up close and personal view of the immense glacier; whale watching and kayaking at Icy Strait: scads of whales, sea lions, birds, seals, otters, plus a grizzly on shore; “glacier adventure” hike at Juneau which was actually an awesome nature hike with enthusiastic knowledgeable guide “Zack”; sled dog mushing ride at Skagway which knocked our socks off; and a self-guided mountain climb at Ketchikan that worked off some calories and earned us “oh wow” views. We also thoroughly enjoyed the “behind the scenes” tour of the ship, which gave us a real sense of the enthusiasm of the crew at work. 2) Our “balcony suite” on deck 11 was super. Sparkling clean, very comfortable, and we ended up spending a lot of time on the balcony enjoying the never ending Alaskan scenery passing by. Our cabin attendant introduced herself on the first day and took good care of us and the cabin. Since our cabin was just few steps from garden cafe, we could get ourselves “room service” and enjoy tea or snacks on the balcony. 3) Crowd handling and efficiency: embarkation and disembarkation were really flawless, both at the stops and at Whittier and Vancouver. We essentially never stood in a line: we sometimes were in a line, but it was moving as fast as we could walk. On the ship, which appeared to be full or nearly full, we never felt crowded at all, except at the music shows that drew a good crowd to the small performance spaces. 4) We bought a three meal premium dining package. The Moderno Brazilian barbecue restaurant was far and away the best we went to; Le Bistro had nice atmosphere but so-so food; and the Jasmine Asian fusion was forgettable and not a premium atmosphere at all, since it shared a space with a loud bar. 5) The buffet and main dining room food was wholesome and had nice variety. My wife ate fish every day and reported it was excellently cooked. The waitstaff in every venue was quite attentive, especially with regard to cleanliness. Drop a fork? a new one was handed to you before you could pick it up. And that reminds me that the ship was impressively sparkling clean from start to finish. We never really SAW anyone cleaning, but it nevertheless stayed spotless. 6) The spa experience was very nice and luxurious, and the one massage we got was excellent! The not so good: 1) The continuous upselling and nickel-and-diming detracted from the experience. We were already paying a lot (for us) for this experience, so the constant barrage of advertisements and pushes got old really fast. Coffee is “free at sea”, but you want a Latte? Get out your wallet. 2) The NCL app is really bad…. hard to navigate, useless for core functions such as making dinner or spa reservations, and (of course) laden with upsells. The human “concierge” who contacted us after booking and helped us with reserving transfers and excursions was top notch, though: really gracious and helpful. 3) The ship is a bit tired and could use some TLC. Chrome rubbed off of door handles, windows covered with permanent fog, the completely nonfunctional laundry services… all could be better on a ship supposedly recently refurbished. So overall an excellent experience and a great way to see the beauty of Alaska.
