Ship Reviews

Overall, this was an enjoyable cruise. The ship was clean and spacious; crew appeared especially attentive to ship's guests. The ambiance reminded me of a grand resort; walking along the multi-story decks 5 and 6 reminded me of a fine Las Vegas hotel resort complex. There are numerous nice venues onboard for drinking and dining. The crew's attentiveness to guests struck me as particularly noteworthy. They would sometimes anticipate guests' needs and attempt to fulfil them (extra deserts would magically appear, drink glasses were never allowed to go empty). The only negative factor was a near daily tendency of the crew and officers to harp about the importance of filling out the end-of-cruise survey (just tell us once). I was particularly impressed to randomly observe a ship's officer stopping to pick up an empty glass while traversing a stairway; to me, this showed how he truly cared for the ship. This culture was evident throughout the officers and crew and enhanced my cruise experience. On other ships, such cleanup would likely be left for the stewards or other crew to address. Although I was initially leery of the many sea days on this cruise, each day was so filled with available activities that I was always able to find something enjoyable to do (including relaxing with a beverage). The cruise director was energetic and readily accessible. Guest services staff was the most efficient (and helpful) of any ship I've ever sailed on. While the headliner entertainment in the main theater was excellent, it was unnecessarily loud (almost always >90 db and on at least one occasion, my watch recorded >100 db); this necessitated hearing protection and was sometimes uncomfortable to listen. Most of the dining venues were acceptable (not noteworthy). Exceptions included the specialty dining venues I experienced, including Chops (great steaks) and Chef's table. The later is very expensive but worth it; six courses paired with expertly curated drinks. Without a doubt one of the best meals I've experienced on a cruise ship. If I were to complain, it would be that some of the portions were overly generous. Some specific food comments about the complimentary dining venues include: Mushrooms - great tasting Hash browns - appeared to be frozen Sysco patties Créme Brûlée - tasty but runny Salmon - underwhelming Coconut shrimp were wonderful Egg plant mint sauce was perfect Tiger shrimp - off flavor Tofu and avocado salad was wonderful! The bars were outstanding! I spent much enjoyable time at Vineyards. The Taste of the Caribbean rum cocktail tasting was one of the highlites of my onboard activities. The staff went all out in entertaining us and making great cocktails. I'm glad the captain had a crossing the equator ceremony. This made for a memorable experience. While the onboard experience was great, my excursion experiences were middling. My excursion time schedules were awful: we were told to arrive at specific times only to discover that the actual time was a half hour later “to accommodate late people”. The Uluwatu Temple tour was described only as a tour of the temple and surrounding grounds. However, only about one-third of the time was allowed for this activity. This main activity felt rushed. The unexpected Cultural Center tour that followed was enjoyable. The final portion was a disappointing waste of time at some basic shopping center. Negative comments: - The boarding process appeared chaotic and seemed to drag on forever. - Disappointing how much soot and smoke the ship exhausts (not LNG fueled) In summary, I would gladly repeat this cruise.

Royal Caribbean never disappoints. Largest RCCL ship to sail from Los Angeles. 4910 passengers. Embarking and disembarking was smooth and fast. Food was excellent in both specialty and public eating areas. We ate at Chops as well as Jamie's Italian (ate at this restaurant several times on past cruise, other RCCL cruises). My wife had Pasta Pomodoro in thick white cream. I had Large Prawn shrimp. Excellent. At Chops, we both had filet mignon. Desserts were excellent. We had two minor disappointments that were not related directly to RCCL. There were lines for activities and for Ice Cream. The other disappointment was on sea days. Even with 3 pools (2 family, 1 adult) it was difficult to find available loungers. Service was excellent. Our table waiter and assistant waiter on day 2 was asking if we wanted the same drink combos from day 1. Impressive. One bar, the Bionic Bar, had 2 robots mixing excellent drinks. You go to a computer terminal, order the drink and watch as the robots made your excellent drinks. Give the North Star a try. You rise on a long arm towering above the ship. Not scary. Didn't try the bumper cars for health reasons, but they looked fun. Kids on the ship enjoyed movies by the pool at night. Promenade level was very popular, especially the karaoke bar and Sorrento's pizza kitchen. This cruise was very good.

I chose this cruise on the ovation because of my previous positive experience with Royal Caribbean, and the ability to combine a trip to Japan with a first ever trans specific crossing. Prior to the cruise I paid for the key program, which turned out to be an excellent choice. With the key program, I was able to board very early and from the time I got out of my taxi to the time I was in the ship was less than 15 minutes. Being able to leave my carry-on baggage at the dining room for our delivery to my cabin was a real advantage and allowed me to explore the ship without toting my belongings. The Key dining room lunch on embarkation day, and the dining room breakfast on debarkation day that were included was excellent and was quite a treat compared to what is usually a hectic affair in the buffet. My cabin, which was a balcony studio cabin was perfect for traveling solo and my cabin attendant couldn't have been more friendly or more attentive. Regarding dining. I selected fixed time dining at 5 PM in one of the main dining rooms. I was seated with a very friendly group that included Australians Americans and Canadians. We were always able to have a lively and entertaining discussion through dinner. The meal service provided by our weight. Staff was excellent. The food quality was very good and depending on what was on the menu for that particular evening would determine whether or not I chose to eat in the dining room or elsewhere. I often had breakfast and lunch on occasion in the solarium bistro. It's buffet setting and small size limited to the crowd and had a more open feeling, especially with tables that were out side of the confines of the bistro dining room. The WindJammer marketplace buffet had an excellent variety of food for every meal, although breakfast was pretty much the same every day. Buffet food with some notable exceptions such as soup were never hot. This was true, even when entering the buffet as it opened for a meal. Trays of buffet food were warm, but significantly less hot than food served in any of the sit down dining rooms. and without a thermometer, I'm not able to judge whether or not they were within a safe temperature range, but certainly not as hot as food delivered to the table in the dining room. In comparison to a cruise, I took several months before I'm the Norwegian joy, the buffet, especially for dinner had new in different offerings every evening of the cruise. Or as a Norwegian things were repeated. Also, the food is of a higher quality. The cold and rainy temperatures while crossing the north Pacific limited my interest in using the outdoor pool, nor did I have any interest in trying the surf simulator or skydive simulator. I did not wanna gamble in the casino. There were multiple different presentations that were informative and educational in nature. These included several presentations by a retired NASA, launch control engineer about space flight, the nephew of Don Knotts, the comedian, talking about his uncle in the entertainment industry, and a speaker talking about great white sharks. Some of the entertainment programs were entertaining, including music and dance productions in the main theater and in 270. There was one American comic that was outstanding, and hearing commentary from my table mates about some of the other entertainers that were from Australia, were entertaining for those that understood Australian references in humor. One of my favorite activities on a sea day of which there were many is to find a comfortable outdoor location shaded from the sun or in this case, the rain to be able to read. The number of locations that were outside and sheltered were very few. While there were indoor locations, such as in the solarium or the promenade or some of the bars are entertainment locations without a show going on worked, rarely were they quiet to read. This is purely a function of the ships design. As a positive sailing in cold and rainy weather in the north Pacific having few outdoor seating areas was probably a positive for most passengers. One notable "activity" was that a Catholic priest was on board and offered mass every day as well as individual counseling or confession for those that are Catholic. While the majority of participants were Catholic, there were others that attended daily, simply for the spiritual benefits. The ship has a capacity for around 4,900 passengers, this cruise had 4,500 passengers of which 1,400 were children. Other than prime time in the buffet, I didn't notice any overcrowding. Will I sale on Royal Caribbean again? Yes, however, my preference is for a more port intensive cruise and on a significantly smaller ship.
